Nashville Kats News Release
NASHVILLE (July 5, 2006) - The Nashville Kats have re-signed four players head coach Pat Sperduto announced on Wednesday. The Kats agreed to terms with OL/DL James Baron, OL/DL Charlie Morris, DS Monty Montgomery and K Jason Witczak.
"These four players were a big help to us last season and we wanted to make sure they were back for next year," said Sperduto. "They are going to be the building blocks of a solid foundation and we expect big things from each of them in 2007."
Baron (6-4, 260) played every game this season and had 16.5 total tackles and three sacks. The former Virginia Tech player owns Kats records for sacks in a season (7) and in a career (29.5). Earlier this year he was named the sixth greatest AFL player of all-time by the league's 20th Season Historical Committee.
Morris (6-2, 290) is in his second year with the Kats and saw action in every contest this year, spending most of his time on offense as a center. Defensively, he added two tackles and a career-high two sacks. Morris, who played for Temple University, will begin his seventh season in the AFL.
Montgomery (6-0, 195) had arguably the best season of his career this year despite missing four games due to injury. The Houston alum was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game six times this season, and he led the team in total tackles (80.0) and interceptions (9). He also forced four fumbles and recovered one.
Witczak (6-1, 188) was acquired mid-season via free agency to fix a struggling kicking game. In the Kats first-round playoff game against Chicago, the former Southeast Missouri State kicker tied a league playoff record with four field goals.
Baron and Montgomery played important roles in the Kats' defense that finished first, allowing a league best 263.9 yards per game in 2006. The Kats will now have seven linemen back from last season's squad who made up one of the best pass rushes in the league, finishing first with 23 sacks. Currently the Kats have 18 players under contract plus five exempt players.
