San Jose CyberRays News Release

SAN JOSE (Aug. 11, 2003) – Katia, the CyberRays' Brazilian forward, underwent successful abdominal surgery this morning at Stanford Hospital and should be ready to join the Brazilian national team when it opens training camp Aug. 25 for this fall's Women's World Cup.

Surgeons removed a tennis ball-sized benign tumor from near her right ovary and a smaller, previously undetected benign tumor from near her left ovary. In addition, a laser procedure was performed to remedy endometriosis, which was discovered during the surgery. Endometriosis is a painful condition in which tissue that normally lines the uterus is found outside the uterus, in this case on the outside of that organ.

She should not suffer any impairment to her ability to have children.

The larger tumor was discovered during an exam Friday, and Katia was held out of the CyberRays' season finale Sunday as a precaution.
