SAN JOSE (Aug. 8, 2003) – Katia, the CyberRays Brazilian forward, has been placed on the injured list and will miss Sunday's season-ending match against the Boston Breakers at Spartan Stadium.

She will undergo surgery Monday morning at Stanford Hospital to remove a tennis ball-sized tumor from her lower right abdomen. Doctors say the tumor is benign, and she should be ready to play for Brazil in this fall's FIFA Women's World Cup, beginning Sept. 20.

``The prudent decision in this circumstance is to withhold Katia from competition, which could be dangerous for her health and well-being,'' said Marlene Bjornsrud, the CyberRays general manager. ``We will be cheering for Katia in the World Cup and next season for the CyberRays.''

Earlier this season, Katia's countrywoman and teammate Pretinha was lost for the season and World Cup with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee, which was suffered in a July 13 international match between the United States and Brazil.

The CyberRays have been given permission by the WUSA to elevate midfielder Betsy Barr from the injury list to the active roster. She is listed as doubtful for Sunday's match because of a groin injury.
