Washington Kastles News Release

Wednesday was another banner day for Kastles players at the US Open as Leander Paes earned an upset berth in the Men's Doubles final and Serena Williams advanced to the Women's Doubles semifinals. Kastles players have now have earned two spots in finals (Men's and Mixed Doubles) and three in semifinals (Women's Singles and two teams in Women's Doubles). The Kastles at the US Open have now amassed an amazing record of 30-4.

Yesterday, Leander and partner Lukas Dlouhy, seeded 4th, faced Bob and Mike Bryan the number one Doubles team in the world and the defending US Open Champions in the semifinals. In a thrilling rematch of last year's US Open Doubles final, Leander and Lukas captured the first set 6-4, only to have the Bryan brothers win the second set 6-3. The third set was a nail biter. Leander came back from 0-40 at 3-3 to eventually hold off four break points and the Bryans saved a match point at 5-6 on Mike Bryan's serve. In the end, both teams held serve throughout the set to force a deciding tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Leander and Lukas jumped out to a 5-0 lead and then a 6-2 lead before the Bryans fought off another 4 match points to tie the score at 6-all. However, Leander and Lukas responded by winning the next two points, the last on a Leander volley winner, to prevail 8-6 in the tiebreaker and advance to the finals.

Next up for Leander and Lukas is the Men's Doubles final on Friday where the pair will attempt to capture their second Grand Slam title of 2009 after winning the French Open crown in May. They will face the third seeded team of Mark Knowles and Mahesh Bhupathi, Leander's long-time Doubles partner.

In other action yesterday, Serena Williams and sister Venus, seeded 4th, in Women's Doubles defeated the 11th seeded Zi Yan and Jie Zheng in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. Venus and Serena dominated with their aggressive power game, while Zheng and Yan won points with a solid game at the net. It was a close match with many swings of momentum and both teams engaged in intense rallies that had the crowd fired up with every point. In the end, Serena and Venus were too strong and prevailed in this quarterfinal encounter.

The Kastles will be on center stage today as they compete in the first two matches of the day in Arthur Ashe Stadium starting at 11:00 a.m. First, the Williams sisters will face Alisa Kleybanova and Ekaterina Makarova (seeded 13th) in a Women's Doubles semifinal. Next, Leander and partner Cara Black (seeded 2nd) will attempt to complete the defense of their 2008 US Open Mixed Doubles title against the unseeded pair of Americans Carly Gullickson and Travis Parrott. Both these matches will be televised live on ESPN2 and should be available on the internet at usopen.org as described below.
