Kastles Opening Night Thriller on July 12th
Published on June 16, 2012 under World TeamTennis (WTT)
Washington Kastles News Release
There are less than four weeks until the Washington Kastles' home opener against the New York Sportimes, featuring former World No. 1 Martina Hingis. Excitement, as expected, is building for the match-up between the heated Eastern Conference rivals.
In three of four previous DC meetings between Washington and New York, the match has been tied through five sets and ended dramatically with a winner-take-all Supertiebreaker.
Atop those memorable evenings is July 16, 2009, when Leander Paes and Robert Kendrick blasted each other with shots during a heated men's doubles set (See video above).
Who knows what will happen this July 12th when Paes and the Kastles clash with Kendrick and the Sportimes again? One thing is for sure: All fans in attendance that night will receive a free commemorative Kastles' championship shirt, courtesy of GEICO.
The magical evening will begin with a championship banner ceremony, honoring the undefeated 2011 Kastles team that won Washington's second World TeamTennis title in three seasons. Then, Paes, Bobby Reynolds, Arina Rodionova and new Kastle Anastasia Rodionova will take on Kendrick, Hingis, Jesse Witten and former Top 40 player and Playboy model Ashley Harkleroad.
The Kastles saved six match points over the course of two matches with the Sportimes in 2011, preserving their perfect season each time when Paes and Reynolds rallied the team in men's doubles.
Some of the best players in WTT will be showcased at this year's Kastles' home opener. Paes and Reynolds ended 2011 as the top-ranked men's doubles team in the league, while the 15-time Grand Slam champion Hingis was the league's highest-rated women's singles player.
Seats to see the latest chapter in the greatest rivalry in World TeamTennis are still available starting at only $30, but they are going fast on Ticketmaster.com!
The Kastles celebrated wildly after rallying against New York last season.

Kastles, USTA and Ward 6 to Usher in Brand New Courts
The brand-new regulation tennis court at Jefferson Recreation Center features 60-foot blended lines.
Join Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells, USTA District of Columbia Executive Director Ronnie Goodall, and Washington Kastles mascot Topspin today at 10:00 am for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly-restored community tennis courts at Jefferson Recreation Center.
The state-of-the-art courts are on 9th & G Streets SW, just one block away from Kastles Stadium at The Wharf and easily accessible from the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station.
Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6D and the greater Southwest Waterfront community gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the USTA and American Express in the restoration of the tennis facility, which cost over $80,000.
The USTA and American Express "Fresh Courts" partner program serves to invest in developing communities through the renovation of existing, damaged tennis facilities. The project in Southwest Washington has led to three brand-new tennis courts for the community to enjoy: one full-sized 78-foot court with 60-foot blended lines and two 36-foot QuickStart courts aimed at children 10 and under.
The "Fresh Courts" program previously targeted two courts in Columbia Heights for restoration.
