Washington Kastles News Release
Kastles players continued their unprecedented run of success at the US Open yesterday by earning a berth to one final (Mixed Doubles), three spots in semifinals (Men's & Women's Doubles, Women's Singles) and one entry into the quarterfinals (Women's Doubles). Overall in the US Open, Kastles players are an astounding 28-4!
The Kastles have been so dominant in the tournament that their biggest obstacles have often been their Kastles teammates. Two of the four losses Kastles players have suffered at the Open have come at the hands of other Kastles. On Sunday, Leander Paes and Rennae Stubbs, the Kastles dominant Mixed Doubles team faced each other in a competitive Mixed Doubles quarterfinal which was fittingly decided in a third set tiebreaker with Leander's team prevailing.
In yesterday's action, Rennae would again face a Kastles teammate, this time she and partner Samantha Stosur (Seeded 3rd) advanced to the Women's Doubles semifinals by defeating Nadia Petrova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands (Seeded 8th), 6-2, 6-3. Nadia's loss to Rennae was the Kastles' only loss of the day as Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy (Seeded 4th) advanced to the Men's Doubles semifinals by defeating Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman (Seeded 7th), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Paes then followed up his victory by earning a spot in the Mixed Doubles finals with his partner Cara Black (Seeded 2nd) by beating Su-Wei Hsieh and Kevin Ullyett (5th Seed), 6-2, 3-6, [10-5].
In the night session, second seeded and defending Champion Serena Williams continued to dominate her Women's Singles matches with her fifth consecutive straight-set victory, a 6-4, 6-3 thrashing of Flavia Pennetta (the 10th Seed). She will face former US Open Champion Kim Clijsters next in the semifinals.
Today's matches start at 11am with Leander and Lukas Dlouhy (4th Seed) facing the number one seeded team and defending US Open Champions Bob and Mike Bryan in the Men's Doubles semifinal in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match will be televised live on ESPN2 and should be available on the internet at usopen.org as described below.
Later in the day, Serena and Venus (Seeded 4th) take on Zi Yan and Jie Zheng (11th Seed) in the quarterfinals of Women's Doubles as the 3rd match in Armstrong Stadium.
You can watch your favorite Kastles players and all of the remaining US Open action live even if you are not in Flushing Meadows.
