Kastles Fight for Playoffs â Sign World #10 Nadia Petrova
July 20, 2009 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Washington Kastles News Release
With just a week left in the WTT's 2009 season, the Washington Kastles made two major announcements that should help their chances of winning the King Trophy. First, they announced the signing of Nadia Petrova, the world's tenth-ranked women's singles player. Secondly, they have secured the rights to host the Eastern Conference finals against the New York Sportimes Friday, June 24 if the Kastles qualify for the playoffs.
The Kastles head into the final week of the WTT season in a four way battle with the Boston Lobsters, Philadelphia Freedoms and New York Buzz for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Currently, the Kastles hold a half-game lead over the Lobsters (and possess a tie-breaker over the Lobsters should they end the season deadlocked) and a one and a half game advantage over both the Freedoms and Buzz.
Three regular season matches remain for the Kastles: Monday on the road against the undefeated and Western Conference-leading Springfield Lasers, at home Tuesday against the New York Buzz and a rematch against the Lasers on Wednesday. Wins in two of those three matches would secure a playoff berth for the Kastles.
The Kastles have taken several steps to enhance their chances of making the playoffs.
Petrova will play for the Kastles during their final two regular season home matches versus the New York Buzz on Tuesday, July 21st and against the undefeated Springfield Lasers on Wednesday, July 22nd. She will undoubtedly provide a boost against tough competition that will include the Lasers' Vania King, the no. 1 ranked women's singles player this year in World TeamTennis, and Liezel Huber, the world's number one ranked women's doubles player, in addition to top doubles player Martin Damm, who happens to be the former doubles partner of the Kastles Leander Paes.
