Washington Kastles News Release
Leander Paes led a Kastles-packed weekend at the French Open, with five Kastles players having made it through to the third round. Competing in the doubles and mixed doubles draws, the team concluded another strong round of play on the red clay courts.
Leander Paes started Sunday off with an upset, as he and partner Marcin Matkowski knocked off the No. 4 seeds and 2016 Australian Open Champions Bruno Soares and Jamie Murray in two tense sets 7-6, 7-6. After exchanging breaks in the first set, the teams headed to a tiebreak. Paes and Matkowski held on 7-5 to take the set. The teams exchanged breaks again early in the second set, setting the stage for another tiebreak. Paes and Matkowski came through again, closing out the tiebreak in similar fashion at 7-4.
The Bryans somehow found a way to upstage Leander's thrilling upset, overcoming a match point in the second set to down familiar foe Radek Stepanek and Nenad Zimonjic 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. After being broken in the first set, the Bryans were on the brink of elimination at 5-6 in the second set tiebreak before roaring back to win three straight points and take the tiebreak 8-6. The Bryans then dominated the third set, breaking Zimonjic and Stepanek twice in route to closing the match out 6-3.
It will be Kastle vs Kastle in the fourth round, as Paes and Matkowski prepare to face the Bryan Brothers. The Bryan Brothers have battled Paes many times during their illustrious careers on the ATP tour. At the 2013 US Open, Paes and Radek Stepanek denied the Bryans a chance at a grand slam, defeating them 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. Paes has never met the Bryans while partnered with Marcin Matkowski and this will be their first meeting at Roland Garros since 2005, which saw the Bryans defeat Paes and partner Nenad Zimonjic 7-6, 6-4. The Bryans also defeated Matkowski last year when he was partnered with Zimonjic in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. Paes and Matkowski will try to keep their run going against the two-time French Open champions.
The Kastles continued their dominance of the mixed doubles draw, with Bob Bryan and Coco Vandeweghe breezing into the third round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Chia-Jung Chuang and Henri Kontinen. The duo will have to summon their best today as they take on No. 3 seed Kristina Mladenovic and Pierre Hughes-Herbert.
Meanwhile, the all-Kastles duo of Martina Hings and Leander Paes will await the winner of Andreja Klepac and Treat Huey against Elena Vesninia and Bruno Soares. Paes and Hingis are hoping to add to their resume with their first win as a mixed doubles team at Roland Garros.
Another World TeamTennis player is making a big splash in Paris, as Shelby Rogers of the San Diego Aviators punched her ticket into the quarterfinals of the singles draw. Ranked No. 106 going into the tournament, Rogers upset No. 25 seed Irina-Camelia Begu, No. 17 seed Karolina Pliskova, and No. 10 seed and two-time Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova in route to her best ever result in a major. Rogers will play No. 4 seed Garbine Muguruza likely on Wednesday, but you can catch Rogers, a Kastles sub in 2014, when she returns to DC with the Aviators to take on the Kastles on August 10th.
