Martina Hingis Vaults to No. 2 in WTA Doubles Rankings
Kastles Superstar Passes Italians, Trails Only Partner Sania Mirza
When Martina Hingis joined the Washington Kastles two years ago, she did not have a world doubles ranking. After all, she hadn't played a match on the WTA Tour since 2007.
Remarkably, 21 months into her comeback, Hingis has catapulted all the way to No. 2 in the world.
With her 22nd win of the season on May 5, Hingis earned enough points to pass Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci and claim sole possession of the second spot in the WTA doubles rankings.
Hingis' current partner Sania Mirza is the only woman looking down at Hingis in the rankings, which are based on a player's Top 11 tournaments over the last 52 weeks. Mirza leads Hingis 7,660 points to 6,560.
Hingis and Mirza have committed to playing the entire 2015 season together. As they win more matches and titles, their ranking points gap will continue to shrink
It may only be a matter of time until Mirza and Hingis are sharing the No. 1 ranking.
"It would be great for both of us to be No. 1 together," Mirza told wtatennis.com. "That's very important to me. For Martina, she's been No. 1 in the world before. But since we're playing like the No. 1 team, I feel like we both deserve to be No. 1."
Hingis has not been No. 1 in the world doubles rankings since the week of March 13, 2000.
Should she reclaim the top spot, the Swiss would become the first member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame to be ranked No. 1 after induction. Man, woman, singles, doubles: It's never been done before.
Hingis returned to the doubles circuit with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on July 31, 2013. She is 53-22 during her comeback with seven WTA titles and a run to the 2014 US Open final.
The Hall-of-Famer is also the reigning Australian Open mixed doubles champion alongside her Kastles teammate Leander Paes.
"It's like everything is a bonus," Hingis said. "I'm just really enjoying the moment. The longer you play in your career, the more you can also enjoy it and lean back, especially in doubles. As for No. 1, it will come with the results. I was never the kind of person who was chasing No. 1."
Hingis will reunite with Paes and represent the Kastles in home matches against the Springfield Lasers on July 26 and California Dream on July 27. Tickets start at only $12 and will be available Friday at 10 am as part of our exclusive presale.
Welcome World No. 36 Madison Brengle to the Kastles!
25-Year-Old American Rising Star Boasts 26 Singles Wins in 2015
She's reached a career-high ranking, beaten a Wimbledon champion and played in her first tour-level final already this season. Now Madison Brengle is a member of the Mylan World TeamTennis Champion Washington Kastles.
The rising star will represent the Kastles when they host the San Diego Aviators on July 16 and Philadelphia Freedoms on July 18. Brengle is also scheduled to play three road matches, including the Kastles' season opener in Boston on July 12.
Brengle boasts a 26-13 record on tour this season, highlighted by runs to the Hobart final and Stuttgart semifinals.
It was in Stuttgart that the 25-year-old American earned the biggest win of her career, upsetting World No. 4 and reigning Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova 6-3, 7-6(2).
How impressive was that victory? Two weeks later, Kvitova defeated the Kastles' Serena Williams en route to the Madrid title.
Brengle has risen 120 spots in the WTA singles rankings over the last year -- from No. 156 on May 13, 2014 to No. 36 today. She beat No. 13 seed Andrea Petkovic on her way to the fourth round of the Australian Open in January.
In 2008, Brengle visited Kastles Stadium at CityCenterDC as a member of the Delaware Smash. Three years later, she represented the Kansas City Explorers in the first match at Kastles Stadium at The Wharf.
This summer, Brengle will wear red and blue in three crucial Eastern Conference match-ups. She is expected to meet the Boston Lobsters' Irina Falconi on July 12 before playing Taylor Townsend of the Freedoms on July 17 and 18.
