Kansas pulls away from Gary for 16-point win

Kansas jumped out early and cruised as the Cagerz throttled the Steelheads 95-79 at the Bicentennial Center on Wednesday night.

It was the last home game for Kansas for the next three weeks as the team hits the road for their annual east coast road trip.

Adam Schaper gave Gary an 8-7 lead with 8:59 to go in the first quarter, but Kansas would answer with authority.

Anthony Johnson hit a three, sparking an 8-0 Cager run, putting Kansas up 15-8 with 7:31 to go in the first. Gary would fight back, taking the lead back at the 2:07 mark of the first as part of a 9-2 run that would carry over into the second quarter, giving the Steelheads a 25-19 lead with 10:56 in the second.

Kansas would regroup and go on a 22-6 run over the next eight and a half minutes to take a 41-31 lead with 2:11 to go on a bucket by Anthony Richardson.

Kansas would carry a 46-37 lead into the halftime break.

The Cagerz would score the first four points in the third to pull out to a 12-point lead, but Gary would rally using an Eddy Barlow layup to get back within six with 5:41 left in the third.

The Cagerz would race back out to a double-digit lead 57-47 at the 2:55 mark, before Gary would use a 5-0 run to get within five, the last time with 29 seconds left on a bucket by Louis White. After a Richardson three, White would hit a bucket as time expired to cut the Cager lead to six after three.

A White free throw would get the Steelheads within five at 64-59, but Kansas would answer with a decisive 19-4 run to take a 83-63 lead with 7:38 left in the game.

Gary would manage to cut the lead in half on a Corey Minnifield score with 3:27 left, but the Steelheads could get no closer as the Cagerz pulled away for the 95-79 win.

Anthony Johnson led Kansas with 27 points, while Richardson had 16 and Brendan Plavich and Nate Johnson had 11 each as the Cagerz shot 34-of-76 from the floor for 44.7 percent. Kansas dominated the rebounds for the second straight night, holding a 53-40 advantage over the Steelheads led by Jason Miller's 10, while Richardson and Marcus Campbell added nine each.

Barlow led Gary with 17, while White had 16 and Jamario Moon 13 as the Steelheads were 31-of-78 from the floor for 39.7 percent. Minnifield and White led Gary with seven rebounds each.

Kansas is off until Saturday, when they travel to Gary, Ind., to face the Steelheads in the third of four straight games between the two teams.
