Kansas Cagerz News Release
Shaun Fountain hit a teardrop shot from eight feet out with 5.9 seconds left to give Dodge City a 108-106 lead over the Kansas Cagerz, and Nate Johnson's potential game-winning three was short as the Legend knocked off the Cagerz on Tuesday night at the Bicentennial Center.
It didn't appear that the Cagerz were going to drop the game, as they led by seven after the first quarter, and would push the advantage to as many as 12 with just over a minute left in the first half.
But Dodge rallied, using a 13-3 run to open the third quarter, tying things up at 63-all on a Chris Sockwell rebound and put back. The Legend would continue the run going ahead by six, 70-64, on a free throw by Fountain with 5:29 left in the quarter.
Nate Johnson hit a three to cut the lead in half, sparking a Cager run that put Kansas back up two, 72-70 with 3:17 left. After Brian Lubeck's free throws tied things back up, Johnny Jackson and Marcus Campbell each scored to put the Cagerz up four, 76-72 with 45 seconds left.
Dodge would score the final four points of the quarter sending the game into the fourth tied at 76.
The Legend used a 9-2 run to open the fourth to take a 85-78 lead with 10:05 left. Dodge would again lead by seven with 7:58 left, before Kansas would make a final run.
Jason Miller would scored to get the Cagerz back within two at 91-89 with 6:31 left, before Dodge would score four straight to go back up by six on a Elvin Mims bucket with 5:44 left.
James Williams would hit a pair of free throws, and Nate and Anthony Johnson would each score to tie it up at 95-all with 3:59 left.
The Legend would push back out to a 104-98 lead on a dunk by Jamar Howard with 1:56 left before the Cagerz would make their final charge. Anthony Johnson would answer with a three-point play to get the Cagerz within three, and Nate Johnson would score the final five points for the Cagerz, including a wide-open three with 21 seconds left to tie things up at 106-all.
After a Legend timeout, Dodge City would set up the final scoring play as Fountain drove the lane and dropped the shot in over Nate Johnson with 5.9 left.
Kansas was led by Nate and Anthony Johnson who each scored 26, while Richardson and Miller had 13 each, Marcus Campbell added 12 and James Williams had 10. After shooting 55.8 percent in the first half, Kansas only managed to connect on 38-of-81 from the floor on the night for 46.9 percent. Miller led the way with seven rebounds, while Richardson had six as the Cagerz outrebounded the Legend 44-42. Kansas had 21 assists led by Nate Johnson's five, and 12 blocks, led by Williams and Campbell with three each.
Dodge City was led by Sockwell's 24, while Fountain had 22 as Dodge was 42-of-80 from the floor for 52.5 percent. Lubeck and Sockwell led the Legend with nine rebounds each.
