Austin Turfcats News Release

Austin, TX - The Austin Turfcats are pleased today to announce that Don Kabel will coach the defensive backs and serve the team as an assistant coach for their inaugural season.

Kabel's football career began as a two year letterman at Alief Hastings High School in the Houston, Texas area, where they won the District Championship in 1996. Following a football injury, Kabel turned his attention to coaching and spent four years from 2000-2004 with Hyde Park Baptist as defensive back's coach. His talent as a coach became evident when two of his players achieved status as All State defensive backs and six others were named All District.

At the professional football level, Kabel coached defensive backs with the Austin Rockers of the National Indoor Football League in 2001 and was the defensive coordinator during a record game for the "lowest scoring game by an opponent" when the team held them to only 24 points with no points in the entire second half.

Kabel later coached defensive backs with the Centex Barracudas of the Intense Football League in 2008 as well as the Game Breakers of the World Football League. The Barracudas made it to the semi-finals while the Game Breakers went all the way to the National Championship before losing.
