Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - Captain Canada is now Captain Fury FC. Head coach Paul Dalglish made it official on Wednesday following training, appointing Julian de Guzman as the second captain in club history.
"Julian is everything you want in a captain," said Fury FC head coach Paul Dalglish. "The presence that Julian has on the pitch and in the dressing room coupled with his experience and his character is why he will wear the captain's armband for Fury FC in 2016."
De Guzman first wore the captain's armband for Canada on March 22, 2013 and has started 23 matches as Canada's captain including five matches in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers for 2018 in Russia. The Toronto, ON native was thrilled and grateful for being appointed as the second skipper in team history.
"Being named captain of Fury FC, a Canadian team, is a huge honor and I feel privileged," said de Guzman. "It will be a great challenge for me and I hope that my experience as the Canadian Men's National Team captain will help me. We have a great group of leaders here in Ottawa so I know that I won't be alone with the leadership duties."
His résumé is pretty impressive - the first Canadian player to feature in La Liga (Deportivo La Coruña), three seasons in the Bundesliga with Hannover 96, and 77 matches in Major League Soccer between Toronto FC and FC Dallas. In addition to his club football accolades, de Guzman has become a role model for young Canadian players for his contributions to his country on the international scene and most recently became the most capped player in Canadian soccer history (86).
Ottawa's new captain will don the captain's armband for Canada in the next round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Vancouver as Canada face Mexico on March 25th at BC Place followed by a return leg at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City four days later.
Fury FC continue their fourth week of training camp that includes a fixture against the reigning USL Champions Rochester Rhinos Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in Rochester.
Fans can renew or buy their 2016 Fury FC season tickets here and become part of a growing legion of fans that has helped make TD Place a fortress.
