Jordan Angeli Named WPS Player of the Month for July
August 4, 2010 - Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) News Release
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (August 4, 2010) - Boston Breakers rookie sensation Jordan Angeli has been voted as the WPS Player of the Month for July on a vote from teams and media, becoming the first true rookie - one year out of college - to win the player of the month award in WPS. Angeli, who was selected out of Santa Clara University in the second round (sixteenth overall) by the Boston Breakers as the team's third pick at the 2010 WPS Draft, notched four goals and one assist in the month of July. Her performance helped lead the Breakers to a 5-1 record for the month, moving the team up from sixth place and into third position in the 2010 WPS Standings. Angeli, who was drafted as a defender and also plays defensive midfielder, has taken on a more offensive midfield position over the past few weeks as Boston head coach Tony DiCicco shuffled his line-up.
Angeli was the top vote-getter among media ballots and finished third among team voting, enough to edge out Philadelphia Independence forward Amy Rodriguez and FC Gold Pride forward Marta for July honors. Atlanta Beat goalkeeper Hope Solo also received considerable votes. The WPS Player of the Month is given at the end of each month throughout the WPS Regular Season.
