Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Talented prospect Daryl Jones reached base three times and scored a run on Friday against the Savannah Sand Gnats, but it was not enough to overcome a four-run deficit in a 4-3 Swing loss at the Cardinals spring training complex in Jupiter, Florida.
Fans might as well get used to seeing him fill out the box score, as the Cardinals expect big things from the 19-year-old who they selected in the third round of the 2005 draft.
Jones, who is expected to return to the Midwest League after 26 games with the Swing to close out the 2006 season, went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, a walk, and a run scored. A former football star that turned down Division I scholarship offers to sign with the Cardinals out of high school, Baseball America has compared his tantalizing skill set to that of six-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner Kenny Lofton.
Mark Shorey stayed hot with two of the three Swing runs batted in just two days after his grand slam powered the team to a victory over Greensboro. The slugger out of Nebraska led the Appalachian League with 13 home runs last season and projects to hit in the heart of the Quad Cities order as a first baseman and designated hitter.
Another notable name in the Swing lineup on Friday was Isaias Garcia. Despite falling all the way to the 34th round in the 2006 draft, the second baseman turned heads in his professional debut by leading the Appalachian League with a .339 batting average. His 17 doubles also caught the attention of the baseball world, indicating the power potential that helped him finish fourth in the league with a .510 slugging percentage.
On the mound it was Tyler Herron, the 46th overall pick in the 2005 draft, getting the start. He struck out two over four solid innings, but was the victim of an error in the third that led to all four Sand Gnats' runs, only one of which was earned.
After that put Quad Cities in a 4-0 hole early, they chipped away with a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth before their comeback fell just short.
Meanwhile, Swing fans will be happy to hear that Kyle McClellan struck out one in a perfect frame to finish the game. After a strong start to the 2005 season with Quad Cities, the righthander was sidelined by Tommy John surgery and spent most of the 2006 campaign rehabbing.
