Jones Named NLL Player of the Month
February 6, 2014 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - Adam Jones needs to make room in his trophy case. On Thursday afternoon, the Colorado Mammoth forward was named the National Lacrosse League's Player of the Month for January.
"In this league, you play only on weekends," said Jones. "For me, the way I prepare is I think about the fact that all week, these teams are scouting you, these teams are thinking about the one game they have to execute on the things they've been practicing all week. The biggest thing in this league is to be consistent. You only get a few games and with 16 players, if one player's not playing up to his potential, then your team's likely not going to be very successful. That's been a goal of mine - to be consistent."
For the first month of the season, that's exactly what the 24-year-old was. Jones scored multiple goals and at least one assist in every game in the month. His 23 tallies and 37 points were tops in the NLL.
"We're incredibly proud of what Adam has been able to accomplish thus far," said Mammoth president & general manager Steve Govett, "and we look forward to his continued growth as a player when he returns to the floor."
Jones' award is bitter-sweet, as he suffered an injury on the first day of February that will see him miss at least a few weeks. His end to the previous month was stellar, scoring seven goals and one assist in the Mammoth's overtime win against the Roughnecks.
Maybe most impressive in January was that Jones - a forward - tied a career-high and led the league in forced turnovers with 12.
"It's something I've always had a knack for," said the award-winner. "Growing up, I realized that that's the kind of thing that helps teams win."
In 2012, Jones was a three-time NLL Rookie of the Week; a two-time NLL Rookie of the Month; and ultimately, the NLL Rookie of the Year.
"The awards are a testament to the work-ethic of our team in general and how well we've worked together."
