Joliet JackHammers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL-RHP Nate Sevier (4-3) allowed two runs over six innings, as the Joliet JackHammers hit five home runs to power their way to a 12-4 victory over the Schaumburg Flyers before 5,345 fans at ALEXIAN Field on Thursday night. The JackHammers winning streak is at four games with the club heading to Fargo-Moorhead to start a three-game series with the RedHawks on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
Joliet scored a run in the second inning against Schaumburg starting pitcher Alex Rollin (2-3). Cory Harris (2-5) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a sharply hit single to right field by Joey Gomes (4-5). Wally Backman, Jr. (2-5) smacked a double off the left field wall for a 1-0 JackHammers advantage.
The JackHammers scored four runs in the third inning to lead 5-0. Doc Brooks (3-4) led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a groundout by Nick McIntyre (0-5). Steve Garrabrants (2-5) hit an RBI single to score Brooks for a 2-0 Joliet lead. Garrabrants scored on a two-run home run by Cory Harris (2-5). The JackHammers scored one more run in the inning to make it 5-0.
Back-to-back solo home runs by Joe Hooft (3-5) and Brooks in the forth inning made it a 7-0 Joliet lead. In the fifth inning, Gomes smacked a leadoff home run against former JackHammers RHP Lonnie Patterson. After Mike Garcia (1-5) and Hoof hit consecutive singles against Patterson, Brooks stepped up the plate and lined a three-run home run to make it 11-0 in favor of the visitors. He finished with two home runs and four RBI on Thursday.
Sevier was outstanding in his start for the JackHammers. He faced the minimum through the first three innings and did not give up his first until the two out mark in the third inning when Wilson Matos (3-3) hit a single. Sevier allowed just one hit and four base runners through the first five innings. The Flyers scored two runs in the sixth inning to make it an 11-2 lead.
Sevier allowed two runs, (both earned), on four hits and walked two while striking out three. The JackHammers scored an insurance run in the seventh inning when McIntyre hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
Loose Gravel: Brooks returned to the Joliet lineup on Thursday from a five-game suspension he incurred last Thursday in the JackHammers 12-10 loss to Schaumburg after arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Neil Turner.
The JackHammers travel to Fargo-Moorhead to begin a three-game series with the RedHawks on Friday night. RHP Carlos Castillo (0-0, 6.35) gets the start for Joliet against RHP Todd George (3-0, 5.85) for Fargo-Moorhead. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night and pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
