Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn. - October 1, 2012) - Adam Greenberg, a member of the Bridgeport Bluefish from 2008-11, will be making his return to the Major Leagues with the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night. The Marlins will sign Greenberg to a one-day contract to finally accomplish his goal of getting a Major League at-bat. He is set to square off against the New York Mets in Miami, with the game being televised on SNY.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for Adam," said Bluefish general manger Ken Shepard. "We would like to celebrate this accomplishment with fellow Bluefish fans at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, where Adam played the past four seasons."
All Bluefish fans are welcome to join us in the Harbor Club on Tuesday, October 2 beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Marlins/Mets game will be aired on two flat-screen TV's, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. Appetizers and beverages will be included, with a cash bar also available. To participate, a $5 donation will be required, with net proceeds going to the Sports Legacy Institute - an organization that advances the study, treatment and prevention of the effects of brain trauma in athletes and other at-risk groups. All fans interested in attending are encouraged to enter the ballpark through Home Plate Plaza and will be escorted up to the Harbor Club. Please RSVP for this event by calling 203-345-4800 or sending an email to info@bridgeportbluefish.com by Tuesday at noon.
The dream will finally come true for the Connecticut native who was drafted in the ninth round of the 2002 draft by the Chicago Cubs and began his professional career in 2002 as a member of Lansing (A, Cubs) of the Midwest League. He worked his way through the Cubs organization until he received his chance to play in the Major Leagues in 2005. He received his first big league plate appearance on July 9, 2005 as a pinch hitter against the Florida Marlins in Miami and was subsequently hit in the head by an errant pitch by Marlins hurler Valerio De Los Santo, which forced Greenberg from the game.
He currently remains one of the only players in Major League history to have at least one plate appearance but never an official at-bat, but that statistic will soon change on Tuesday night as his career will come full-circle as he puts on a Miami Marlins uniform.
Greenberg last played for the 'Fish in 2011, slugging a career-best 10 home runs and batted .259 with 82 runs scored, 27 stolen bases and a team-high 73 walks. He also recorded 12 triples on the year, which moved him past Angel Espada as the all-time Bluefish triples leader with 28 career three-baggers. During that season, Adam also had the chance to face pitcher Valerio De Los Santos for the first time since their Major League showdown. In their only matchup, Greenberg singled off of De Los Santos, who pitched for the Long Island Ducks at the time.
The Bridgeport Bluefish Professional Baseball Club, a charter team in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, plays its home games at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, located off Exit 27 of I-95 on the corner of Broad Street and South Frontage Road in Bridgeport. 2013 season tickets are available by calling 203-345-4800.
