July 26, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Macon offensive specialist CHRIS JOHNSON, Memphis wide receiver/defensive back TERRELL ADAMS and Louisville offensive lineman/defensive lineman ANDREW TIPPINS have been named the Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 17 of the 2005 season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Johnson (6-3, 175, Georgia Southern), in his second season, helped the Macon Knights cruise to a 72-47 win over the South Georgia Wildcats on Saturday night. Johnson grabbed 12 passes for 165 yards and six touchdowns. The six receiving scores broke the Knights franchise record for receiving touchdowns in a game. Johnson scored on both the deep pass and in the redzone as his six scores came on throws of 35, 33, 28, seven, six and two yards. Johnson, who has AFL experience, scored on three consecutive possessions for the Knights in the second quarter to turn a seven-point deficit into a 12-point lead. This is Johnson's first career weekly honor. Matt Jackson was the last Knights player to win a weekly award, earning U.S. Army Ironman of the Week honors in Week 11.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Adams (5-9, 190, Mississippi Valley State), in his second season, is the second Memphis Xplorers player to be honored by the league in as many weeks. Khreem Smith won ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors last week. This week Adams earns U.S. Army Ironman of the Week honors for his three-touchdown game against the Central Valley Coyotes. On offense, Adams rushed twice for ten yards and one touchdown. He also caught five passes for 55 yards and one touchdown. On defense he recorded 3.0 tackles (2 solo), and picked off two passes, returning one 30 yards for a touchdown. His touchdown rush and interception return for a score were the first two scores of the fourth quarter and stretched a four-point Memphis lead into an 18-point advantage. Memphis can clinch the No. 1 seed in the National Conference Playoffs with a victory over the Battle Wings on Saturday night.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tippins (6-2, 275, St. Cloud State), in his second season, became the second lineman to win the ADT Defensive Player of the Week for a performance against the Manchester Wolves in as many weeks. Tippins was the Fire's second leading tackler with 4.5 (four solo) tackles. Of these tackles, 3.5 were sacks for a loss of 20 yards. He also forced one fumble, blocked an extra point and recorded an interception on the night. His 3.5 sack performance ties San Diego's Asi Faoa for the best single game total this season. His performance helped keep the Fire alive for the East Division Championship. A win this week at home over Quad City combined with a Manchester loss to Albany would give the Fire their first division championship in franchise history. This is the first weekly honor of Tippins' career. The last Fire player to win a weekly award was teammate Cesare Manning won the Offensive Player of the Week Award in Week 13
