Danbury Westerners News Release

Danbury, CT- February 16, 2015: The Danbury Westerners, the longest tenured team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, are proud to announce the signing of right-handed Pitcher John Holland for the 2015 season. A native of Jackson, New Jersey, Holland is currently a junior and a management major at Felician College. Holland will bring a fastball approaching 94 mph while changing speeds with an 84 mph breaking ball.

Holland has seen great success in his first two seasons pitching for the Felician Golden Falcons. In 2013 he was named the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division II/III Co-Rookie Pitcher of the year. That season, his freshman year, Holland went 3-2 with 43 strikeouts, 23 walks, and a 1.47 ERA in 38 innings of work. Last season, Holland pitched 66.1 innings and went 4-5 overall. He finished with a 2.98 ERA, 60 strikeouts, 30 walks, four saves, and a complete game shutout. In conference play he compiled a remarkable 0.56 ERA.

Over his two seasons at Felician, Holland has proven that he is extremely versatile. In his freshman season, Holland came out of the bullpen as a set-up man and a closer, compiling a team-high five saves. Last season, Holland started eight games in addition to coming out of the bullpen and finished with four saves. Regardless of whether he is started or coming on in relief, few batters have had success against him. Opponents hit a meager.144 against him in his freshman season. In his sophomore season he held opposing hitters to a .249 average.

Holland's best performances of his college career came over a one week period. On March 28th, 2014 against Bloomfield College he pitched a three-hit one-run gem while striking out a season-high 12 batters. He followed that performance with a six-hit complete game shutout in his next start against Philadelphia College.

Paul Schaffer, President of the Danbury Westerners, commented, "John has displayed tremendous poise on the mound, and his versatility will be an asset to our pitching staff. I look forward meeting John when he arrives this summer."
