(Bridgeport, Conn. - April 9, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced that former Yankee Jim Leyritz and former Red Sox Bill "Spaceman" Lee will play during the Heroes for Heroes Legends Game at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday, July 9th. Leyritz joins Charlie Hayes on the Yankees Roster, and Lee will join Ellis Burks for the Red Sox. More players will be announced in the coming weeks.
Leyritz attended and played ball at the University of Kentucky. He began his Major League career with the New York Yankees, making his debut in 1990. Jim was traded to the Anaheim Angels after the 1996 season. In 1997, he was traded to the Texas Rangers, and then to the Boston Red Sox. Following his sting with Boston, Leyritz spent two years with the San Diego Padres, and two years back with the Yankees before ending his professional career in 2000 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his 21 years in the majors, the slugger played in 903 games and ended up with a .264 batting average, racking up 387 RBI and 90 home runs. He was a member of both the 1996 and 1999 World Series championship teams.
Lee attended and played ball at the University of Southern California. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 22nd round of the 1968 draft. In his 321 appearances with the Sox, the "Spaceman" racked up 94 wins with a 3.64 ERA and 578 strikeouts in 1503.1 innings. He played in the 1973 MLB All-Star Game and started two games in the 1975 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. Bill was traded at the end of the 1978 season to the Montreal Expos, where he was named The Sporting News National League Left Hander of the Year. He was later released by the Expos in 1982. In 2008, Lee was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame for holding the team's record for most games pitched by a left-hander (321) and the third-highest win total (94) by a lefty. Since the end of his Major League career, he has played for semi-professional teams in the United States, Venezuela, and Canada.
