April 18, 2003 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release
Adelanto, Ca. â Four Shutout innings delivered by John Castellanos and Carlton Wells, held off High Desert's high powered offense in a 5-3 win at Maverick Stadium. The win snaps a two game losing streak, while the Mavericks again fail to win consecutive game for the first time this season.
Castellanos relieved starter Jason Bulger, and allowed one hit with two strikeouts in two innings. Frolian Villanueva singled and was sacrificed to second, representing the tying run. But Castellanos struck out Chris Morris and Todd West to end the threat.
Wells pitched the last two innings to earn his first save. He benefited from two double-play grounders, one from Jason Belcher in the 8th, and a second by Villanueva in the 9th to end the game.
The bullpen's work preserved Bulger's (2-0) second win of the season. Bulger lasted five innings, allowing eight hits and striking out six.
Bulger ran into trouble in the third. Daryl Clark and Kade Johnson hit back-to-back solo homers, giving the Mavericks a 3-1 lead. Clark's came on a 3-2 pitch, a towering blast down the right field line, his sixth of the season. Johnson's fifth of the year cleared the fence in left-center field.
The offense resurfaced after a two-game layoff, with a 10-hit attack, including Dan Uggla's third home run of the season. Kyle Nichols gave the JetHawks the lead for good with a two-run double, as part of a three-run fourth inning.
Mavs starter Brian Mazone (0-1) took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits in six innings.
The third game of the series will be Saturday at 3:05 p.m. as Doug Slaten (1-0) takes the mound for the JetHawks. Right-hander Dan Kolb (0-0, 7.88) will pitch for High Desert.
