Bats Go Silent in 8-3 Loss

April 18, 2003 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

San Bernardino, Ca. – The JetHawks offense failed to thrive – even with the hitter friendly conditions at Maverick Stadium – in an 8-3 loss to High Desert. The loss was the second straight for the JetHawks, while High Desert ended their two game losing streak.

The Mavericks had no problems in their home ball park, pounding out 14 hits. Chris Morris was three-for-five with three runs scored, and Daryl Clark drove in four runs, including his fifth home run of the season. Morris and Clark were among five Mavericks with multiple hits in the game.

Clark gave the Mavericks an early lead with a two-run home run to center field in the bottom of the first. Johnny Raburn singled in a run in the fourth, and Clark added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to extend the lead to 4-0.

Starter Dan Hall, meanwhile, gave the JetHawks fits at the plate. Hall (2-0) allowed two hits and struck out a season-high seven batters in five innings. The JetHawks failed to score against the opposition's starting pitcher for the second consecutive game.

Jay Garthwaite broke up the shut out with a solo home run in the seventh inning, his fourth of the season. Kyle Nichols made the final score more respectable with a two run home run to right center field in the ninth.

In the last two games, the JetHawks have scored just three runs on 12 hits after leading the league in hitting through the first 10 games of the season.

Matt Henrie (1-1) took the loss, despite battling his way through five innings. Henrie allowed eight hits and four runs, while striking out four.

Third baseman Dan Uggla was the lone JetHawk with more than one base hit. Uggla doubled in the fifth and ninth innings, ending the night 2 for 4.

The four game series continues at Maverick stadium Friday night. Jason Bulger (1-0, 7.00) will pitch for the JetHawks against lefty Brian Mazone (0-0, 10.80) in a 7:05 p.m. game.
