Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - The surging Lancaster JetHawks came back to earth on Sunday night at the Hangar. After winning the first two games of the series against Inland Empire, The JetHawks yielded six runs in the first two inning and saw their winningest starter lifted from the game with an apparent injury. They created plenty of chances in the later innings but never could break all the way through, and dropped the ballgame 8-5.
The JetHawks sought their first four-game winning streak of the 2009 season, but made the task difficult from the outset. Inland Empire scored three runs in the first inning on a rally sparked by a questionable call at first base. With one out, Elian Herrera grounded to second baseman Craig Corrado. Corrado's throw was wide of first base, but Matt Weston appeared to tag Herrera on the shoulder. Umpire Spencer Flynn disagreed and called Herrera safe. Trayvon Robinson then singled, and Scott Van Slyke walked. Steven Caseres singled Herrera and Robinson. Van Slyke came in to score on Alex Garabedian's single. They would tack on three more in the second, the big blow a two-run shot from Van Slyke. Herrera scored again on the blast after he walked.
The JetHawks finally got on the board in the third when Jon Gaston singled in J.B. Shuck with two outs. Shuck reached base all five times on Sunday with three walks, a single and a double.
Perhaps the biggest news of the night for Lancaster was not good. Starter Chris Hicks was lifted in the third inning with apparent neck tightness. The most dependable starter in the rotation gave up four earned runs on seven hits while striking out two. He had won his previous three decisions.
The JetHawks added single runs in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth but never could put together the big inning. They left ten men on base. Both David Flores and Matt Weston hit solo home runs.
The JetHawks finish the series tomorrow against Inland Empire. They host the 66ers at 7:00 PM on a Feed Your Face Monday. The radio broadcast can be heard on Magic 1340 AM and online at www.JetHawks.com beginning at 6:45 PM.
