Jenny Boucek named head coach of Sacramento Monarchs

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., Nov. 15, 2006 - The Sacramento Monarchs today announced the hiring of Jenny Boucek (Boo-SEC) as the team's new head coach. She is one of three women currently coaching among the 14 teams in the WNBA, joining Anne Donovan of the Seattle Storm and Pat Coyle of the New York Liberty, and is the sixth head coach in franchise history.

"We are incredibly proud of the Monarchs and thrilled today to welcome Jenny as our new head coach," said team owners Joe and Gavin Maloof. "It's very exciting to have such an intelligent and energetic leader joining the Monarchs under the guidance of our great General Manager John Whisenant. Jenny's expertise will enhance Sacramento's extremely successful franchise."

Boucek returns to the WNBA after serving as an advanced scout for the NBA's Seattle SuperSonics since 2005. She brings seven years of WNBA assistant coaching experience, including the 2004 WNBA Championship run with the Seattle Storm. She spent three seasons with the Storm (2003-05), also advancing to the WNBA Playoffs in 2005. Prior to Seattle she was an assistant coach for the Miami Sol for three years (2000-02), during which the team advanced to the WNBA Playoffs in 2001. She began her coaching career in 1999 as an assistant coach for the Washington Mystics.

Her WNBA career began as a player when she became a member of the Cleveland Rockers in 1997, during the WNBA's inaugural season. In the immediate off-season she played in the Icelandic Basketball League, earning league MVP honors.

Boucek was a four-year starter at the University of Virginia (1992-96), helping lead the Cavaliers to four regular season ACC Championships and three NCAA Elite Eight appearances. She was a two-time GTE Academic All-America team member and was named to the All-ACC team her senior year. Also a two-time team Defensive Player of the Year honoree, Boucek finished her career as a member of UVA's 1,000-point club and competed in the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1993.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Boucek graduated with high honors from Virginia with a degree in sports medicine and sports management.
