Mississippi Surge News Release

Call it a ripple up effect.

With the tentative end to the National Hockey League lockout, several Southern Professional Hockey League teams, including the Mississippi Surge now have players on loan to teams in other leagues. As a result, Jeff Grant is the new captain of the Surge.

Jeff is definitely a leader by example with his work ethic he brings each and every day, be it a game or practice, head coach Jeff Bes said.

Grant, the only player to play for the Surge all four seasons of its existence has been serving as an alternate captain this season.

It's just a change of a letter on the jersey, Grant said. I feel like I've always been a leader, especially with Cole (Ruwe) being injured so long. It should be a smooth transition.

Ruwe is one of several Surge players now on loan to other leagues. He is with the Fort Worth Brahmas of the Central Hockey League. Other Surge players on loan include James Issacs (Idaho Steelheads, ECHL), Tommy Lange (Cincinnati Cyclones, ECHL), and Corey Tamblyn (Trenton Titans, ECHL).

That's good for those players to have the chance to play at the next level, Bes said.

Grant joked about one other benefit of being team captain.

Now the referees have to listen to me, he said with a laugh.

The Surge begins a five game road trip Friday at Knoxville at 6:30 p.m. There will be a special team watch party at Mugshots for the Friday game. The Surge plays Saturday and Sunday at Fayetteville. The next home game is the annual Pink in the Rink fundraiser, to benefit the American Cancer Society on Sunday, January 20th at 3:05 p.m.

Tickets for all Surge games are on sale now. Discounts include students, military personnel and casino employees. The team is also has a new line of exciting merchandise available. The Surge offers discount tickets to military personnel and for children under 12. . For more information call 228-594-3800 or log onto www.mssurge.com.
