Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, October 21, 2008 - The Portland LumberJax have signed rookie transition player Matt Yager, rookie goalie Matt Flindell and rookie defenseman Jameson Whitehead to one-year agreements, Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan announced today.
Drafted with the 34th Overall Selection (Third Round) in the 2008 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft, Yager scored 20 goals and added 30 assists in 21 games of action during the regular season for the Victoria Shamrocks Jr. A Team in the Western Lacrosse Association. Yager also scored four goals and added an additional five assists in eight playoff games.
Yager was a teammate of Flindell's and forward Cory Conway this past season with the Shamrocks.
"Matt (Yager) is just a tremendous athlete," said Keenan. "He's not real big, but he's very strong and fit. He has the ability to play both ends of the floor equally as well and has outstanding speed."
Flindell was taken with the 61st Overall Selection (Fifth Round) in the Entry Draft. The Victoria, British Columbia native stopped 88.29% of the shots he faced during the regular season. In the playoffs, Flindell stopped 88.51% of the shots he faced and only allowed 4.82 goals-per-game.
"Matt will be given a real good opportunity to come in and earn a roster spot," said Keenan. "There's always a longer adjustment period for goalies in the NLL, but Matt has very good ability."
From Buffalo, New York, Whitehead played college football and club lacrosse at Southern Oregon University. The 6'3", 250 lb. tight end caught nine passes for 63 yards during his final season in 2007 and also scored 42 goals and added 29 assists for the lacrosse team.
"Jameson is another player who could very well earn a spot because of his pure athleticism and the style of play we plan to play this season," added Keenan. "He's big, but he can run as well."
