Jax Look To Continue Winning Ways

January 13, 2009 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Portland Lumberjax News Release

PORTLAND, January 13, 2009 - Fresh off a split with the Colorado Mammoth, the Portland LumberJax will look to continue their winning ways on Friday, January 16th as the Jax (1-2) travel to Edmonton to meet the Rush at 6:30 p.m. PST at Rexall Place. This is the first of three regular season meetings between the two teams and the first of two regular season meetings in Edmonton.

Last weekend, Colorado beat Portland 12-10 Friday night at the Rose Garden. Then, one night later, the two clubs met again, this time at the Pepsi Center in Denver. To say that Portland took out its 0-2 frustrations on the Mammoth is an understatement. The Jax dominated every facet of the game.

After the Mammoth took an early 1-0 lead, the Jax would score 12 unanswered goals to put the game out of reach. Colorado went scoreless for 33 minutes, 22 seconds during Portland's dominating run that began early in the first quarter and continued into the third quarter.

Goalie Matt Disher stuffed the Mammoth all game long, stopping 51 of the 56 shots he faced to increase his NLL leading save count to 118.

Portland's defense left Colorado black and blue and tattooed. Mammoth forward Brian Langtry, who scored five goals on Friday in Portland, was held to only one goal.

Forward Gavin Prout, who's become a regular thorn in Portland's side throughout the years, was held to one assist as the Jax collected their largest of margin of victory in franchise history and earned their first win in Denver since the 2006 season.

Jax forward Ryan Powell scored six points (3 goals, 3 assists) for his highest scoring game of the season. Forwards Cory Conway, Peter Morgan and Derek Malawsky also supplied two goals each. Overall, nine different players scored as the Jax crushed the Mammoth.

The Rush (0-1) are coming off a 10-9 overtime loss to the Calgary Roughnecks to begin their 2009 season. In the loss, Rush goalie Steve Dietrich made 48 saves and forward Dan Teat supplied three goals.

Dating back to last season, the Rush are on a six game losing streak and have been outscored by 40 goals during those six losses. In fact, Edmonton has been beat by eight goals or more in three of those six losses.

In addition, the series history has not been kind to Edmonton. Portland boasts a 6-2 lead in the series history. The Jax are 2-1 at Rexall Place and have beaten the Rush by four goals or more four times. Portland won two of the three matchups last season.

With three games remaining in January, Portland hopes its win in Colorado was a season defining win that will fuel the team for the rest of the season.
