San Antonio Scorpions News Release

Scorpions midfielder, Javier Saavedra, has been named the NASL Player of the Week for his performance on May 18th vs. the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, the North American Soccer League announced on Monday.

Saavedra collected an assist and scored the fastest goal of the season so far for the Scorpions when he tapped in his first of the campaign after only 57 seconds. In a great piece of play, Scorpions midfielder Edin Husic sent in a cross that was headed by Esteban Bayona towards goal. Strikers keeper Jeff Attinella made a great save but parried it into the path of Saavedra who completed the tap in.

Saavedra's assist came in the second half when his inch-perfect free kick was headed into the back of the net by teammate Luka Vucko.

"It really is an honor to be singled out among so many great players for this achievement, but it wouldn't be possible without the team," said Saavedra. "I owe this accomplishment to the way the team played on Saturday for the win."

The 39-year-old Mexican native played for 89 minutes in the match before being replaced near the end of the game. He made 13 appearances for the Scorpions last season, scoring one goal.

"When a guy has gray hair, like me, and is pulling the team out of a hole with a game like that, its just an outstanding performance," said Scorpions Head Coach Tim Hankinson. "It shows what a great professional he is."
