Akron Racers News Release

AKRON, OH -- Akron Racers rookie starting pitcher, Jailyn Ford (James Madison) has been named NPF Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 11-July 17, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Dating back to Monday, July 11, Ford tossed 17.1 innings, recorded 15 strikeouts and picked up three wins over the course of the week. Ford's 15 strikeouts led the league over the last seven days.

This was already the second time that Ford brought home Pitcher of the Week honors in 2016. With Ford scooping up an honor this week for the Racers, Akron has now had a weekly award recipient for six consecutive weeks. Their rookie class has accounted for seven weekly awards this year and has a pair of candidates in the hunt for Rookie of the Year in Ford and shortstop Sami Fagan.

Ford began the week throwing a complete game, two-hit shutout against the Pennsylvania Rebellion on July 11. She struck out four of the 23 batters she faced without surrendering a walk. In the final game of the series versus the Rebellion on Thursday, July 14, Ford nearly threw another complete game as she went 6.1 innings allowing two runs on just four hits.

In the series finale with the Dallas Charge on Sunday, July 17, Ford struck out one out of every three batters that she faced, tallying six strikeouts in four innings pitched. The rookie notched the win in all three of her starts this week for the Racers and posted a 1.62 ERA.

Over the seven-day stretch, Ford struck out 15 batters while only giving up 10 total hits to the 68 batters she faced.

Currently, Ford ranks second in the NPF in wins (8) and innings pitched (74.0), trailing only Monica Abbott of the Scrap Yard Dawgs. She also ranks third in the league in strikeouts (55), behind Abbott and Dallas Charge pitcher Lauren Haeger. Ford leads all NPF rookies in each of the three categories.

Ford and the second place Racers (19-12) will look to continue to stay hot after winning six of their past seven games, as they conclude their current six-game home stand with a three-game series the third place Dawgs (17-13) beginning Monday, July 18 with a game at 7:05 p.m. The two teams will meet again Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. and then Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. in an important series for playoff contention as both teams try to fend off each other as well as chase down the first place USSSA Pride (20-8) in pursuit of the NPF Playoffs.
