Jacks Unable to Top Marshals

July 6, 2013 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

The East Texas Pump Jacks win streak was snapped at seven, as they fell to the Texas Marshals 7-3 on Saturday night. The Pump Jacks offense started strong but sizzled out in the late innings, resulting in their first loss of the second half.

The Pump Jacks got on the board first in the opening inning. Matthew Dickey opened the game with a beautiful double off the left field wall to put a runner on the base for Connor Huesers. Huesers worked a full-count and then rocketed his first home run of the season off the scoreboard in left to give the Jacks a 2-0 lead.

After the two-run first inning it was all Marshals on the scoreboard, as they added one in the first and fourth innings, two in both the fifth in seventh, and one in the eighth to pull away with a huge lead.

After allowing the run in the bottom of the first, the Pump Jacks were able to limit the damage in the second after getting into a bit of trouble with the bases loaded and only one out. After allowing a double and two infield singles, Austin Watson was able to induce a ground ball, and the Pump Jack defense turned two to end the inning, maintaining the 2-1 lead.

However the trouble continued in the bottom of the fourth, as Watson found himself in another bases loaded jam, this time with no one out. He was able to pick up a big strikeout for out number one, but then he allowed a run to score on a fielder's choice ground out, which knotted the game at two.

Bret Bitow entered the game in the fifth with one out to relive Watson and allowed the go-ahead runs. With two outs, and runners on first and third, Bitow surrendered a double into left to bring home two and give the Marshals the lead, which would carry through until the end of the game. The Marshals added two more in the seventh thanks to a single and a wild pitch to take a 6-2 lead.

Brooks Marlow came on to pitch in the eighth inning and was able to work through the inning allowing only one run. After lead off single to Gevon Jackson, J.J. Robinson helped out Marlow by making a great throw to second to catch Jackson stealing (the first time he has been caught this season). The run crossed home after another single and an RBI double, pushing the Marshals lead to five, 7-2.

The Pump Jacks rallied to put one more on the board in the ninth. With one out Zach Jones struck out, but reached first on a passed ball. Marshals' catcher Chabrielle Pizzarro then attempted to throw to first, but the throw sailed wide of the first baseman allowing Jones to move over to second. Then after a fly out moved Jones to third, East Texas down was down their last out. Dickey kept the Jacks alive by lining an infield single to plate Jones and move the deficit to 7-3. Huesers followed with a single of his own, his third hit of the night, but unfortunately both he and Dickey were stranded on base as a ground out ended the inning and the game.

Starting pitcher Watson pitched 4.1 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, picking up two strikeouts. Bitow was tagged with the loss after pitching two innings and allowing four runs on five hits. Evan Schreiber relieved Bitow and pitched two thirds of an inning, and Brooks Marlow closed out the game pitching an inning allowing one run on two hits.

The Pump Jacks will look to rebound in the final game of the two-game series Sunday night against the Marshals. Game time is set for 7:05p.m.
