Jacks Announce Logo Contest Winner

July 31, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release

The year was 1960. John F. Kennedy defeated Richard Nixon for the presidency. The National Hockey League consisted of only six teams. Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho haunted the nightmares of moviegoers across the nation. And a group of young men known as the Beatles made their singing debut in Germany. That same year, Jerry DeLise brought a hockey team called the Zephyrs to Muskegon, Michigan.

The 2009-2010 season marks 50 years of professional hockey in Muskegon. To help honor the milestone, the Lumberjacks asked the fans to submit their ideas as to what they thought the 50th Anniversary Logo should look like. Over 75 entries from as far away as British Columbia were sent to the Lumberjacks. After some long debate, Marc Okkonen of Muskegon has been selected the winner of the fan submissions. His design will be used on a variety of printed material throughout the season. He will receive a prize of season tickets for 2009-2010.

Five others have been named Honorable Mention: Shawn Abele of Spring Lake, Michigan; George A. Todoroff of Mount Pleasant, Michigan; Dan DiCiuccio of Grand Rapids, Michigan; J. P. McDaniel of Muskegon; and Abbey Brodrick of Muskegon. All of those who entered will receive two vouchers for a regular season game this season. The five Honorable Mention winners will also receive a copy of any items their logo is used on.

The Official 50th Anniversary Logo is also being released. The logo contains the shape of the original International Hockey League (IHL) shield to represent all five teams in Muskegon's history having played at least one season in the IHL. The logo is also outlined in gold in honor of 50 years.

The concept of the official logo was born after looking at all of the submissions. "All of those entries helped us understand what we were looking for," said Stacey Patulski, co-owner of the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Many of the entries were high quality and from some very talented artists but they were too difficult to easily reproduce.

The Lumberjacks organization thanks everyone who entered the contest.

Marc Okkonen and the Lumberjacks Front Office are available for comment. Please contact the Muskegon Lumberjacks for more information.
