Joliet JackHammers News Release

JOLIET, IL - The Joliet JackHammers and National City present Jammer's Book Buddies Reading Program. This is a reading incentive program intended for children in kindergarten through the eighth grade. When a student reaches the program's ultimate goal, a ticket to a JackHammers game is rewarded to the student. National City and the JackHammers are reaching out to schools and libraries within Joliet and the surrounding communities to get involved with this program.

The Joliet JackHammers are in the sixth season of Jammer's Book Buddies Reading Program! Over the past six years, the program has grown to reach over 130 schools in the region and provide 70,000 vouchers to the students and teachers in the program during the 2008 season.

"National City is proud to continue to deliver on our commitment to serve the Joliet and surrounding communities through the Jammer's Book Buddies Reading Program. This program delivers on investing in today's youth which will lead to the strength of our communities' future success", said Kim Pearson National City District Sales Executive/Vice President.

Here's the game plan: Jammer's Book Buddies Reading Program is eight weeks in length. It is divided into four (4) two-week segments, with a segment representing a base on a baseball diamond. A child needs to read one book per segment. When a student completes a segment (one book), they advance to the next base. The goal is to "hit a home run" meaning the four segments were completed and ultimately four books were read. The reward for "hitting a home run" is a complimentary General Admission ticket to a Tuesday Night JackHammers game during the 2009 season.

Parents and teachers monitor the reading progress of the children. All participating schools will be offered a complimentary Reading Program assembly that focuses on reading and character counts. Jammer who is the official mascot of the JackHammers, along with JackHammer front office members will be on hand to explain the program and get the kids excited about reading.

"Jammer's Book Buddies Reading Program is designed to build enthusiasm towards reading for grade school students. This incentive based program also creates family and community involvement," said Kelly Sufka, VP/General Manager of the Joliet JackHammers.
