JackHammers garner more honors

JOLIET, IL – The Joliet JackHammers have two players featured on the Baseball America All-Independent League All-Star Team. LHP Brian Mazone (pronounced: Muh zone) was tabbed as a starting pitcher on the First Team, and OF Josh Loggins was named an outfielder on the Second Team. The JackHammers recently completed their third season. The 2005 season is set to begin on Friday, May 20 versus the Gary (IN) SouthShore RailCats at Silver Cross Field in Joliet's City Center.

Mazone's 2004 season of accomplishments includes being the starting pitcher for the Northern League's mid-season South Division All-Stars, being tabbed the Most Valuable Pitcher in the All-Star Game, named a Northern League end of the season All-Star, having his contract purchased by the San Francisco Giants, and ending the season at Triple-A.

As a JackHammer, Mazone made 14 starts and was 9-and-2 with a 1.73 ERA including 15 walks allowed, 27 runs allowed (20 earned runs), 77 hits allowed and 95 strikeouts in 104.1 innings. He held opponents to a .201 batting average. Even though he was not in the Northern League for the final month of the season, he still ranked 1st in the league in ERA and 1st in shutouts (4) at season's end. Two of the four shutouts were one-hitters. Mazone was a Baseball America First Team Starting Pitcher as a JackHammer in 2002.

Loggins 2004 season resume includes being a starting outfielder for the Northern League's mid-season South Division All-Stars and being named to the Northern League's end of the season All-Star Team. Through 92 games played for the JackHammers, Loggins batted .305 (116-for-380) with four triples, 14 stolen bases, 17 doubles, 20 home runs, 58 runs scored and 76 RBI. At season's end in the Northern League, he ranked 3rd in home runs and 5th in RBI.

Loggins led the 2004 JackHammers and tied a team record with 33 multiple hit games and 21 multiple RBI games. In the JackHammers single season record books, he ranks 1st with at-bats (380), hits (116), home runs (20), RBI (76) and total bases (201).

The Northern League had 11 players on the First (6) and Second (5) Teams, more than any other independent league. In addition to Mazone, the First Team included catcher Kelly Gulledge (Fargo-Moorhead), outfielder Adam Olow (St. Paul), designated hitter Eddie Pearson (Kansas City), starting RHP Hank Woodman (Schaumburg) and relief RHP Chris Chavez (St. Paul).

In addition to Loggins, the Second Team included first baseman Mario Delgado (Schaumburg), second baseman Justin Hall (St. Paul), shortstop Geoff McCallum (Schaumburg) and designated hitter Ray Brown (Kansas City). All of the selections can be viewed at www.northernleague.com.
