JackHammers Fall to Flyers

SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Schaumburg Flyers (19-15) scored two runs in the 8th inning to break a 1-1 tie and beat the Joliet JackHammers 3-2 before 6,325 fans at ALEXIAN Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The JackHammers (14-23) scored a single run in the 1st inning against LHP Alain Quijano. LF Gary Harris (1-4) led off the inning by popping out to second base. SS Kevin Rios (1-4) followed with a triple to the left field wall. 1B Freddie Thon (0-3) followed with an RBI groundout to plate Rios for a 1-0 JackHammers lead.

The Flyers tied the game in the 5th inning with a single run against RHP Rory Shortell. 3B Vince Harrison (0-3) led off the inning by flying out to left field. LF TJ Wilson (2-3) reached base with a bunt single. He stole second base and scored on a single by C Richard Mercado (1-3) for a 1-1 tied score.

Shortell tossed seven innings and allowed one run on six hits. He did not walk a man and struck out two Flyers in a "no-decision."

Schaumburg pushed across two runs in the 8th inning against the JackHammers bullpen. LHP Ryan Paul (1-3) came into the game in the 8th inning and walked CF Travis Ezi (0-3). SS Travis Brown (0-3) followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Ezi to second base. 2B Jose Valdez (1-4) flew out to right field for the second out of the inning. The JackHammers elected to intentionally walk DH Felix Jose (1-3) to put runners at first and second base.

Manager Wally Backman lifted Paul in favor of RHP Chad Blackwell. RF Victor Ferrante (2-4) responded with a two-run double to plate both runners and give the Flyers a 3-1 lead.

The JackHammers answered back with a single run in the 9th inning against Flyers closer Craig James. Thon led off the inning with a walk and DH Tydus Meadows (1-4) grounded out. 3B Isaac Omura (0-3) walked and Wally Backman, Jr. (1-1) came in to pinch-hit for RF Jamie McGraw. Backman, Jr. singled to load the bases.

Andrew Pinckney (0-1) came off the bench for 2B Danny Cox (0-3) and grounded out to first base. Thon scored from third base to get the JackHammers within one run at 3-2.
