
JackHammers Drop 9-5 Decision To Flyers

Four late runs propelled the Schaumburg Flyers (10-21) past the Joliet JackHammers (14-16) 9-5 Tuesday night at Alexian Field. The JackHammers will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
The Flyers plated five second inning runs to jump out in front 5-1 against Todd Privett. Joe Pauley drove in a pair of runs and Joey Gomes extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a bases loaded double, scoring three runs for the 5-1 advantage.
Joliet chipped away in the middle frames, eventually tying the game at five in the seventh. Roberto Mena's groundout in the fifth scored Chris Colton to cut the deficit to 5-2. Rafael Mendez hit a slow roller to short in the sixth to score another run and Colton scored from second on an infield fielder's choice to make it 5-4.
The JackHammers completed the comeback in the seventh on a Freddie Thon single up the middle, scoring Jonathan Wyatt.
Schaumburg would respond with three in the bottom half and one more tally in the eighth for the 9-5 final. Terry Mermer and Tommy Fitzgerald collected back-to-back RBI doubles in the seventh and Brandon Newton singled home the third run. Joe Nowicki plated the final run in the eighth on a single to right field.
Privett went 5.2 innings for Joliet, allowing five runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
Griffin Bailey (1-2) was charged with the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits in an inning of work while Tom Lyons (1-1) earned his first win of the season for the Flyers.
Colton collected three hits in his second game for Joliet, scoring two runs. Wyatt and Freddie Thon each picked up two hits.
The JackHammers send Bear Bay (2-2) to the mound tomorrow as Joliet looks to snap a three game losing streak. Cody Evans (0-3) will take the ball for Schaumburg. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. with a 6:50 pre-game on 1340 WJOL.
