Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The clock struck midnight for one team while another kept dancing as the CNBC Minor League Baseball Logo competition continued on Tuesday with the GreenJackets moving into the Elite Eight. Augusta successfully knocked off the #16 seed Casper Ghosts on Tuesday.
"This is a true case of the clock hitting midnight on this Cinderella story," GreenJackets General Manager Nick Brown said. "The Ghost went to bed winning in the competition but woke up to find out they were bounced because of our strong fan support."
Voting for the Sweet 16 ended at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning with Augusta getting 53% of the over 8,000 votes cast for the match up. The GreenJackets, a 12 seed in the tournament, relied on an early email blast to its thousands of fans on Tuesday morning to push Augusta past Casper as the better logo.
"The fans have spoken, the votes have been counted and the GreenJackets again proved to have the best logo," Brown said. "(The Ghosts) had a good run but we just had a better game plan and a lot more fan support."
The GreenJackets and Ghosts had 8,325 people vote for their match-up. The Ghosts, located in Casper, WY, already had knocked off #1 seed Montgomery and #9 seed Lancing as they enjoyed a ride of popularity into the Sweet 16. The GreenJackets fan base proved to be too formidable for the short-season club to handle.
The GreenJackets have an interesting match-up in the Elite Eight today as they face their division rival in the South Atlantic League, the Columbus Catfish. The GreenJackets had the best overall record in all of Minor League Baseball in 2007, however it was the Catfish that swept Augusta out of the playoffs as Columbus captured its first South Atlantic League Championship.
"They stole our opportunity to win a ring and a championship for our fans here in Augusta," Brown said. "So you better believe we are all ready to repay the favor by bouncing them from this national competition as the best Minor League logo in the country."
The contest has been put together by Darren Rovell with 64 logos chosen to participate in the competition. The winner of the 64 team field will be crowned the best Minor League Baseball Logo in the country and the competition runs through March 31 on the web site, www.cnbc.com.
The GreenJackets have had their current logo since the 2006 season and it highlights the GreenJackets' ties to the Augusta community and the Masters Golf Tournament. Auggie, the team mascot, is portrayed in a green jacket holding two baseball bats and two golf clubs underlying the GreenJackets name.
The 20th Anniversary season begins at home on Thursday, April 3 with a four game series against Greensboro. The home stand will include a Fireworks Show on Friday, April 4, the ZOOperstars on Saturday, April 5 and finish on Sunday, April 6; one day before The Masters first practice round will begin. It is the first time since the 2003 season that the GreenJackets will open at home before The Masters.
Season seat packages start as low as $55.00 per seat. For more information on season seats call the GreenJackets at 706-736-7889 or visit www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
