Jackals Beat the Beast with Three in the Third

ELMIRA, NY - October 3, 2016 - The Elmira Jackals (1-0-0-0) scored three goals in the third period to defeat the Brampton Beast (0-1-0-0), 4-2, at INVISTA Centre in Kingston, Ontario to open the 2016 preseason schedule .

The Beast jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 4:52 of the first period when Luke Pither snuck behind the defense and beat Jackals goalie Dalton McGrath with a wrist shot on a breakaway. The Beast generated more pressure throughout the first, but the Brampton native McGrath was strong for the Jackals to keep it 1-0 heading to the second.

The Jackals began to tilt the ice in their favor in the second period, knocking on the door several times before Horseheads native Joel Wetmore finally cashed in to tie the game at one. Wetmore was quick on a loose puck in front of the Brampton net and poked it home for an unassisted goal with 5:34 left in the second to tie the game at one. Both teams made goalie changes at the halfway mark of the second, with Adrian College product Tyler Parks stepping into the crease for the Jackals.

Elmira grabbed its first lead of the game just 2:04 into the third period when Zach Luczyk banked in a shot off Brampton goalie Andrew D'Agostini, putting the Jackals ahead 2-1. Wetmore and Todd Christian picked up the assists on Luczyk's first goal of the preseason. The Beast pulled even at 7:15 of the third with Brandon MacLean firing home a shot from the right circle, but the Jackals responded a few minutes later. After extended pressure in the offensive zone on a power play, Lou Educate roofed a shot from the slot at 11:40 of the third, just two seconds after the Jackals power play expired. Rich Botting and Andrew Harrison were credited with the assists on Educate's first goal of the preseason.

Luczyk iced the game with an empty-net goal, his second of the game, late in the third to give the Jackals the 4-2 win in the ECHL's opening preseason game.
