Published on November 29, 2007 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The field staff that led the Albuquerque Isotopes to the precipice of the Pacific Coast League playoffs in 2007, will be back in its entirety for the 2008 season with manager Dean Treanor returning as manager for the fourth consecutive year, the team announced today. Steve Phillips will also be back as Albuquerque's hitting coach while Rich Gale returns to handle the pitching coach duties. Steve Miller will reprise his role of the last three campaigns and return to Albuquerque as the club's trainer.
Dean Treanor, 59, who also managed the Isotopes in their 2003 inaugural year and has helmed the team in four of its five seasons in existence, returns after leading the 'Topes to a 72-70 record in 2007 and a near playoff berth, with the 'Topes being eliminated from the PCL post-season on the second-to-last day of the season. Under Treanor's stewardship, Albuquerque has consistently fielded one of the Pacific Coast League's strongest teams, claiming the 2003 Central Division title and finishing just short of another division crown on the last weekend of the 2005 campaign. In his four years as Isotopes manager, Treanor has amassed a record of 294-278, only once finishing a season with a record below .500 (70-72 in 2006). In 2008, Treanor will become the third-longest tenured manager in the history of Triple-A Baseball in Albuquerque, behind only Del Crandall and Terry Collins. Next season will also mark Treanor's sixth as a manager for the Triple-A squad of the Florida Marlins, having skippered the Calgary Cannons in 2002 before accompanying the team on its move to Albuquerque. Treanor spent the 2004 season as Florida's minor league pitching coordinator. Prior to joining the Florida organization, Treanor served as pitching coach in the Los Angeles Dodgers chain, including a year as pitching coach for the 2000 Albuquerque Dukes.
Steve Phillips, 39, resumes his position as Isotopes hitting coach, where last year he helped guide the team to a .287 overall batting average, its second highest mark ever. Prior to making his Triple-A coaching debut with the 'Topes in 2006, Phillips spent 2005 as hitting coach of the Carolina Mudcats, Florida's Double-A affiliate. Before joining Carolina, Phillips managed three seasons in the Marlins system, spending 2003 and 2004 with Single-A Greensboro and 2002 with Single-A Kane County.
Isotopes Announce 2007 Coaching Staff...Continued
Once again taking charge of Albuquerque's pitchers will be Rich Gale, 53, who returns after a successful season for the Isotopes and an autumn in the Arizona Fall League. After spending 11 years away from the game to be with his family, Gale returned to the coaching ranks in 2006 as the pitching coach for the Carolina Mudcats. In 1992 and 1993 Gale served as pitching coach for the Boston Red Sox, where his charges included Roger Clemens, Frank Viola, and Jeff Reardon. After being drafted by Kansas City in 1975, Gale spent seven years in the Major Leagues with the Royals, San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds, and Red Sox, where he amassed a record of 55-56 and made one World Series appearance with Kansas City in 1980.
Keeping the 'Topes healthy once again will be trainer Steve Miller, 33, who returns for his fourth straight season at the Triple-A level and his seventh as a member of the Marlins organization. After joining the organization in 2002 with the Single-A Kane County Cougars, Miller steadily ascended through the Florida system, serving as trainer for Single-A Greensboro in 2003 before spending the 2004 campaign in Carolina.
Albuquerque begins its 2008 home campaign on April 11th with a four-game homestand against the Oklahoma RedHawks, Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers.
