CHARLOTTETOWN - Thomas Casey's goal ten minutes into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Charlottetown Islanders defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs, 5-3, Sunday at Eastlink Centre.
Nikita Alexandrov, Cayse Ton, Brett Budgell and Thomas Casey had a goal and an assist apiece for Charlottetown (33-21-5-0) while Daniel Hardie added an empty-net goal.
William Poirier tallied a goal and an assist for Saint John (13-35-9-2). Radim Salda and Cole Reginato also scored.
A scoring summary is available HERE.
The Islanders struck first halfway through the opening period when Alexandrov rifled a wrister from the left circle that beat goalie Alex D'Orio over his left shoulder.
Salda tied the game nearly six minutes later.
The Czech blueliner had just stepped out of the penalty box when he took a pass at the red line for a partial breakaway. Salda snapped a low wrist shot that went under the glove of Charlottetown goalie Matthew Welsh.
The home side regained the lead eight minutes into the second period when Ton finished off a 2-on-1 pass from Thomas Casey, chopping home the feed off the right side of the crease.
It became a 3-1 game with under four minutes left in the period.
With the Islanders on a power play, Alexandrov took a pass behind the net and threw a quick feed to the left wing side of the goal. Budgell spun a backhander through D'Orio's legs.
But the Sea Dogs answered just over a minute later.
Poirer took a long pass from his own zone on the right side of neutral territory, carried it into the offensive zone and ripped a low wrist shot under Welsh's blocker.
Saint John tied the game two minutes into the third period.
Reginato carried the puck on a 2-on-1 and opted to shoot, whipping a wrist shot past the glove of Welsh to make it 3-3.
Casey put the Islanders in front to stay midway through the third period.
A shot from the right side by Ton was deflected and bounced to the left wing side of the crease. Casey buried it past a helpless D'Orio.
Hardie concluded the scoring with an empty-netter with one minute to go.
Welsh made 16 saves for the win. D'Orio turned aside 43 shots in a losing cause.
Budgell and Casey were named first and second star, respectively, with a goal and an assist each. Kelvin Grove, P.E.I., native and Sea Dogs' captain Bailey Webster took third star with an assist in his final regular season game in his home province. Attendance was 2,887.
