Islanders Go for Bounce Back Performance against Mooseheads
February 4, 2020 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
It almost looked like the Charlottetown Islanders were fully back.
After a strong come-from-behind victory on Thursday night against the Shawinigan Cataractes where they scored the six goals, the Isles were virtually shut out in their next game on Saturday night when they lost 5-1 to the Moncton Wildcats. They'll look to get back on track tonight in a Tuesday night tilt in Halifax against the Mooseheads.
The Islanders (25-21-5-0) will try to replicate the success they had at the Scotiabank Centre back in January when they defeated Halifax 7-2 back on January 12th. It was an all-team effort in that game with five different players recording goals including Brett Budgell, who scored twice and added an assist in the lopsided victory.
Unfortunately for Budgell, that was the last time he cracked the goal column. Like the rest of the team, Budgell's offense has virtually dried up as of late, something that the group has been working on in practice. It appeared to be back on the right path with the 6 goals scored against Shawinigan before meeting Moncton's high-octane squad. They'll hope this matchup against the Moose helps to restore the offensive confidence they had earlier in the season.
Meanwhile Halifax (18-26-2-1) is also floundering as of late, having lost three straight and five of their last six games. Sitting in ninth in the Eastern Conference standings, the Mooseheads had plenty of opportunities lately to put distance between themselves and the Gatineau Olympiques for the final playoff spot; however, they dropped crucial games against the Olympiques and Acadie-Bathurst Titan. At 39 points on the year, Halifax sits just one point up on Gatineau for that final playoff berth.
One player who has been consistently strong for Halifax is former Islander Kevin Gursoy. The 20-year-old, acquired from Charlottetown in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick, received an expanded role on Halifax's top line and has made the most of it, scoring six goals and 13 points in 14 games as a Moosehead. He now sits just one point back of his career high in points set last season as an Islander, and is just 3 points away from 100 in his QMJHL career.
