Ironmen finish season with three game win streak

Newark, N.J. (Sunday, April 5, 2009) - The New Jersey Ironmen finished their 2008-09 season in style today by defeating the first-place Detroit Ignition at Prudential Center, 17-14, ending the year on a red hot three-game winning streak. Unfortunately for the Ironmen, the Xtreme Soccer League has no championship game, and the season ends with many questions left unanswered.
Tiguinho scored the third straight goal for New Jersey, dating back to his two-goal finish in a 12-9 victory over the Milwaukee Wave yesterday. Veteran midfielder Goran Vasic fed him the notch three minutes into the opening frame today. After Kyt Selaidopoulus equalized for Detroit at 7:07, Vasic hooked up Chile Farias for a triple at 12:22 to give the hosts a 5-2 advantage.
At 6:05 of the second quarter, Ignition midfielder Vahid Assadpour made it 5-4, but a Farias to Lucio Gonzaga knock at 14:21 put New Jersey back on top by three, 7-4.
The game became a seesaw affair in the third stanza with both sides exchanging scores and the period ending with the Ironmen leading 13-10. New Jersey recorded goals by Vasic (Lucio), Farias and Lucio. After a Lucio to Vasic tally 1:58 into the final frame made it 15-10, Detroit climbed within a single point at 15-14. With defender Josh Rife on as the sixth attacker, Adauto Neto hooked up Tiguinho to seal the win for the Ironmen, 17-14.
New Jersey finishes out the season with a winning record at 11-9, and they are the only XSL club that ended the year with wins against each team in the league the last time they met. Lucio completes the year with 63 points and is the inaugural points champion for the XSL.
