Ironmen edge Milwaukee in shootout

Milwaukee, Wisc. (Sunday, March 29, 2009) - While they did not play a game, the Detroit Ignition (11-7) won the inaugural Xtreme Soccer League championship today, thanks to an assist by the New Jersey Ironmen (9-9). Playing in their final road match-up of the season, the Ironmen got the better of the Milwaukee Wave (9-9) this evening at the U.S. Cellular Arena, 15-14.
Milwaukee got on the board first in this contest, but New Jersey answered by railing off nine straight points. Tiguinho notched the first Ironmen goal at 14:25 of the opening frame, and Randi Patterson went coast-to-coast and drilled a triple past Wave goalkeeper Nick Vorberg 24 seconds later. Brazilian striker Adauto Neto then scored a deuce 12 seconds into the second quarter to give New Jersey three goals in 47 seconds of play. Patterson got on the other side of the score sheet at 4:31 when he hooked up Cuban defender Rey Martinez, and the Ironmen established a 9-2 advantage. Milwaukee midfielder Brett Weisner closed the gap to 9-4 at 7:36 of the second stanza, and after the officials sent New Jersey defenders Tim O'Neill and Evan McNeley to the penalty box, forward Marco Terminesi brought the Wave within three points, 9-6. That tally would stand as both clubs headed to the locker rooms for halftime.
These two teams exchanged goals in the third period, with the Ironmen receiving two-pointers from Martinez and Neto to send New Jersey into the final 15 minutes of regulation with a 13-10 edge. At 3:15 of the fourth quarter, a Neto to Lucio Gonzaga power play knock increased the Ironmen lead to 15-10, but Milwaukee notched a pair of goals to make it a one-point game, 15-14. Wave head coach Keith Tozer eventually pulled Vorberg in favor of Troy Dusosky as the sixth attacker with a little over a minute remaining, but the Ironmen stood strong to take the victory.
New Jersey will finish up their season at Prudential Center next weekend. First up, they will host Milwaukee at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon with former New York Giants captain George Martin as honorary captain before finishing the season on Sunday against the Ignition with former U.S. National Team captain Claudio Reyna as honorary captain.
