Ironmen Come Out Victorious In Inaugural "Healthy Kids Day"
NEWARK, NJ- The New Jersey Ironmen (11-10) picked up a good win today, defeating the California Cougars (8-12) in their inaugural "Healthy Kids Day" by a score of 16-8. Tony Meola played well in goal for the Ironmen, and New Jersey captain Lazo Alavanja led the scoring with a pair of three-point goals. Newark Mayor and honorary captain Cory A. Booker got the morning started after kicking the ceremonial first kick to Meola in a day surrounded by educational programming relative to fitness and nutrition. Ironmen forward Dizzy Antoniuk booted the game into action at 3:07 of the opening frame by burying an assist from defender Ibrahim Kante, and Brazilian midfielder Tiguinho hit a two-pointer for his fifth goal of the season to increase the advantage to 4-0 at 4:41. California defender Evan McNeley put the Cougars on the board at 12:53, and the first quarter came to an end with the home team gripping a tight 4-2 lead.
After coming up just short on a few opportunities, the Kante to Antoniuk duo struck again at 8:32 of the second stanza, placing a 6-2 count on the scoreboard in favor of New Jersey. At 10:56 Alavanja nailed a three-point tally to increase the advantage to 9-2.
Alavanja again hit from beyond the three-point arc at 8:46 of the third quarter for the first score of the second half, giving the home club a ten-point advantage, 12-2. MISL assist leader Goran Vasic sent a brilliant feed across the face of the goal with seven seconds left in the third period, and Stefan Stokic cleared the ball inside the far post to give his team a 14-2 lead.
At 1:36 of the final stanza, Antoniuk hooked up midfielder Tim O'Neill for a two-point tally, but California made it 16-4 at 8:57 when Pedro Lupercio finished an assist from Chris Handsor. Cougar midfielder Semir Mesanovic and Handsor each tallied goals in the final minutes to hang the final score in favor of New Jersey, 16-8.
The Ironmen hope to ride the momentum of this victory into the last full month of the season. The team returns to Prudential Center on Sunday, March 2, for a 4:00 p.m. contest with the Orlando Sharks. The theme of the evening will be focused on "Soccer Moms", and the club will be honoring former New York Cosmo midfielder Vladislav "Bogie" Bogicevic in a pregame ceremony. Tickets can be purchased today by calling 1-800-IRONMEN.
