July 30, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Wild News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Wild, proud American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the NHL's Minnesota Wild, announced on Thursday that Team Mascot "Crash*"* has been honored by Drake University with an Iowa Character Award.
Crash was given the Mascot of Character award from Drake University as part of the school's Character Counts! Program. He is one of the more recognizable and popular mascots in central Iowa, regularly making appearances all over the region. Crash acts as a great ambassador to the game of hockey in the greater Des Moines area, regularly participating in the team's school programs "Wild About Reading" and "Healthy Living Floor Hockey". Crash has made more than 100 community appearances from children's pediatric visits to local schools over the past calendar year.
"We are proud of Crash for receiving this honor", said Iowa Wild President Todd Frederickson. "He is the ultimate team player and does a wonderful job of helping improve our community and growing the game of hockey in central Iowa. We believe him to be one of the best mascots in the AHL and would not be surprised if he wins more awards in the future".
Over the summer, the friendly mascot has made an extra effort in the community with "random acts of kindness" - surprising people in the general public with good deeds. Iowa's team mascot spearheads the team philanthropic efforts by leading various community fundraisers. He was instrumental in helping the Wild finish second in central Iowa for funds raised for the American Heart Association's Heart Walk in June.
In early July, the AHL recognized the Iowa Wild for the Best Fan Experience in the Western Conference. Crash was a significant role player in the team's nightly entertainment, amplifying the game experience for fans of all ages at all home games.
Crash receives his award on Friday, July 31 at the Iowa Character Awards dinner on the campus of Drake University at the Robert D and Billie Ray Center.
CHARACTER COUNTS! is the nation's most widely used framework for character development. It is centered on basic values called the Six Pillars of Character. CHARACTER COUNTS! was founded by the Josephson Institute in 1992. It has since spread throughout the world as a valuable tool to teach character to youth and adults. The awards reflect former Iowa Gov. Robert D. Ray's lifelong commitment to civility and character development. It was originally presented to Gov. Ray in 2003 for his exemplary character, visionary leadership, and commitment to advancing the mission of Character Counts in Iowa.
