International League Player of the Week
May 5, 2008 - International League (IL) News Release
The International League announced today that Rochester outfielder Darnell McDonald and Columbus pitcher Jason Bergmann have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period from April 28-May 4. Each is the first member of their respective club to win an IL weekly award this season.
DARNELL MCDONALD, Rochester Red Wings IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Rochester outfielder Darnell McDonald hit .448 (13-29) with two homers and 14 RBI over the last seven days, cruising to his first International League Batter of the Week award since August of 2002 (also with Rochester). McDonald has been one of the IL's hottest hitters since being activated from the Disabled List on April 15, posting a .351 batting average (2nd in the IL). The first of five multi-hit games this week for McDonald came Monday against Pawtucket and included a grand slam. He tacked on a single, double, and triple the following night while driving in three more runs. In two games McDonald had more than doubled his 2008 RBI total (from 6 to 13), but he was just getting warmed up. His biggest run-producing outburst came Friday night in Toledo. McDonald drove in five in a 6-4 victory against the Mud Hens, highlighted by a three-run, two-out homer in the 5th inning. Overall McDonald finished the week with 14 RBI, four more than anyone else in the League. He also led the circuit with 7 extra-base hits and a .862 slugging percentage. McDonald was tied for 2nd in the League in hits (13), 3rd in hitting (.448), and tied for 3rd in homers (2) and stolen bases (3).
29-year-old Darnell McDonald is in his eighth consecutive season in the International League. Since 2001, McDonald has played in 692 games with Rochester, Ottawa, Buffalo, Durham, and Columbus. He was acquired via trade by the Minnesota organization in June of 2007. McDonald is also a veteran of 21 games at the Major League level, hitting .143 in 42 at-bats with Baltimore and Minnesota. McDonald is a native of Ft. Collins, CO.

JASON BERGMANN, Columbus Clippers IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Columbus right-hander Jason Bergmann got his season turned in the right direction this week with a pair of dominant outings. Bergmann allowed just one unearned run in 14.0 innings, improving his Triple-A record from 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA to 2-2 with a 3.68 ERA. He tossed a gem Tuesday night at Indianapolis, lasting 8.0 innings and surrendering just four hits and two walks while striking out six for his first victory of the season. Back home in Columbus yesterday, Bergmann blanked Lehigh Valley for 6.0 innings, striking out five while allowing three hits and two walks. No other IL hurler could match Bergmann's numbers this week, as the 6'4" righty finished with a 0.00 ERA in a League-best 14.0 innings.
26-year-old Jason Bergmann is in his seventh professional season, all within the Montreal/Washington organization. Bergman has a career record of 15-7 at the Triple-A level, mostly coming with New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League in 2005 and 2006. Bergmann has seen Major League action every year since 2005, including going 0-1 in three appearances with the Nationals earlier this season. Bergman is a native of Neptune, NJ.
