Mario Doyon scored the lone goal of the game, 2:03 into the overtime period, giving the Ice a 1-0 victory over the Odessa Jackalopes Saturday night. Centereman Russ Guzior set up the game winner after Bernie John took the play inro the Jackalope zone leading a three on one breakout. The 1-0 victory was the first time Indy played a 1-0 game in overtime since 11-12-1999 against the Columbus Cottonmouths.
"I was coming into the play with Russ and Bernie and being the trailer, I expected the vpuck. It came to me and all I did was direct it into the net. Lucky for us, it went in and we leave with the win," said Doyon. "We really did deserve this win though, theyplayed a tough defensive trap and got great goaltending, but it was our game and we earned it."
The goal was a bit controversial as a the two teams played three on three in the overtime period after a goaltending interference call on Odessa's Scott Green and a roughing call against Indy'ds Jason Baird. League rules state that the teams should have played four on four.
During regulation, the Ice outshot Odessa 44-25. Jackalope netminder Joel Martin stymied the Ice, keeping Indianpolis from jumping on rebound opportunities. Brent Zelenewich matched Martin shot for shot, denying 25 shots during regulation and two more in the overtime period. Making just his second career start, Zelenewich picked up not only his first career win, but a shutout as well.
"For the first five minutes or so, I was shaking I was so nervous. Finally I settled down," said Zelenewich.
For the weekend, Indianapolis and Odessa each took a victory, Odessa escaped town with 3 points while the Ice took 3 as well. The neutral zone trap and a lack of physical play can be attributed to a uneventful weekend of hockey.
Indianapolis will play again on Wednesday morning, an 11:00am start, against the Oklahoma City Blazers.
