
Indoor Football League Week Six Recap

Richmond, VA: Six weeks of Indoor Football League action is in the books. Eight league games were featured in Week Six, including the IFL Game of the Week which saw the Amarillo Venom travel to Austin, TX to take on the Turfcats on Saturday Night in a match-up of first year IFL franchises. Contenders for the United Bowl are starting to separate themselves from the pretenders. Meanwhile, some teams made statements with wins over favored rivals. The 2010 season is shaping up to provide for a dramatic finish in a race for prestigious postseason berths.
Week Six began on Thursday when the Fairbanks Grizzlies (4-1) traveled to battle the Alaska Wild (2-3). This was the third match-up of the season between these bitter state and Pacific North Division rivals. Round 3 went to the Grizzlies as they outlasted the Wild 31-30. The biggest play of the game happened with 1:25 left in the fourth quarter. Wild QB Donald Carrie connected with WR Stephen Whitehead for pull the score within one point. The Wild attempted a two point conversion to take the lead but the conversion was stifled by the Grizzlies defense. All three losses by the Wild have come by one point this season. Both teams will be back in action next week as the Wild travel to face the Kent Predators and the Grizzlies travel to take on the Tri-Cities Fever.
Play resumed on Friday with the IFL Game of the Week. The undefeated Amarillo Venom turned in a dominating performance defeating the host Austin Turfcats 71-20. The Turfcats (1-2) held a 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter but the tide turned quickly as the Venom (3-0) outscored the home team 64-7 over the final three quarters. Venom QB Julian Reese was unstoppable. He completed 19-22 passes for 263 yards and 6 TD's. The Venom look to be a team to reckon with in the Intense Conference. Both teams will be in action next week as the Venom host the Corpus Christi Hammerheads and the Turfcats host the Abilene Ruff Riders.
In the first of six games on Saturday evening, the San Angelo Stampede Express defeated the Abilene Ruff Riders 39-37. The Stampede Express (3-1) continued on their winning ways displaying another dominating rushing attack led by RB Derrick Ross. For the second time is as many weeks, Ross crossed the century mark carrying the ball 17 times for 120 yards and 2 TD's. The Ruff Riders (0-4) will continue to search for their first win of the season next week when they travel to face the Austin Turfcats, while the Stampede Express hosts the West Texas Roughnecks.
In a rematch of Week One, the Arkansas Diamonds again defeated the Corpus Christi Hammerheads 35-21. The Diamonds boast the IFL's second rated defense which only allows 26 points per game. Reigning Week Five Defensive Player of the Week DL Luis Vasquez continued to tear through opposing team's offensive lines, registering a sack to add to his league leading 5.5 sacks on the season. The Hammerheads will look to rebound against the Amarillo Venom next week and the Diamonds will be on a bye.
The Green Bay Blizzard improved to 4-1 on the season with a 46-45 victory over the Maryland Maniacs (0-3). In a highly competitive battle which saw the teams exchange the lead throughout, the Central North Division leading Blizzard were able to pull out the victory. The Maniacs (2009 Atlantic East Division Champions), are off to a slow start this season but will look to jump start 2010 with a victory when they host the Rochester Raiders on Sunday. The Blizzard will also be in action in Week Seven when they travel to face the La Crosse Spartans.
Not many teams have been able to pull of what the Wichita Wild did on Saturday, leave Sioux Falls with a victory. The Wild, thanks to explosive RB Darius Fudge and a stifling defense, defeated the Storm 44-26 in a Central West Division showdown. Carrying momentum fresh off of a 57-47 win over the Omaha Beef on national TV, RB Darius Fudge powered the Wild to victory with 13 carries for 56 yards and 2 TD's, while also hauling in 2 catches for 22 yards and a TD. The three scores add to his league leading 11 TD's for the season. The Storm were never able to get into a rhythm offensively as the athletic Wild defense harassed QB Terrance Bryant to 116 yards passing. The Wild have pulled the season series to 1-1 and both teams sit atop of the division with matching 4-1 records. Both teams will return to action next week as the Storm travel to face the Sioux City Bandits and the return home to play the Omaha Beef.
The Richmond Revolution (3-1) suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Rochester Raiders (2-2) 33-29. Raider's QB Perry Patterson paced the team with 120 yards passing and 2 TD's, adding 10 rushes for 42 yards and a TD. The Raiders defense was the story of the game as they held the Revolution to 121 yards of offense. The Revolution will look to rebound as they battle with the West Michigan ThunderHawks for the division lead in Week Seven. The Raiders will look to build on their momentum when they travel to take on the Maryland Maniacs.
In the final game of Week Six, the Omaha Beef (2-2) defeated the La Crosse Spartans 39-27. Beef QB Be Sanky completed 22 of 31 passes for 185 yards and 5 TD's as he returned to form after a rough outing last week against the Wichita Wild. The expansion Spartans (0-4) continue to improve as they turned in their best performance thus far. The offensive looks to be starting to gel thanks to the hard running of RB Mark Bonds (18 carries for 78 yards and 3 TD's). Both teams will be in action in Week Seven as the Omaha Beef travel to face the Wichita Wild and the Spartans host state rival, the Green Bay Blizzard.
Week Six Vidswap.com IFL Players of the Week will be announced on Wednesday. The IFL season will continue with Week Seven on Friday April 9th when the Alaska Wild travel to face the Kent Predators.
