Indians Call up NECBL Alum, Pioneer Valley's Barnes
Published on May 30, 2012 under New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release
The Cleveland Indians recalled left handed pitcher Scott Barnes yesterday. Barnes made his debut today by throwing a scoreless inning, striking out one, against Kansas City.
The 6'4" Barnes was Cleveland's sixth rated prospect entering this season. He had a 3.81 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 28.1 innings for Triple-A Columbus prior to his call-up. Barnes was on pace to get a September call-up last season, until a torn ACL in July prematurely ended his 2011.
Barnes becomes the 83rd New England Collegiate Baseball League alumnus to make his Major League debut this season, and the sixth to debut in 2012. He joins 2008 NECBL MVP Matt Adams (St. Louis/Pittsfield), 2006 NECBL Rookie of the Year Christian Friedrich (Colorado/Vermont), catcher Blake Lalli (Chicago Cubs/Vermont), outfielder A.J. Pollock (Arizona/Vermont) and pitcher Dan Otero (San Francisco/Newport) as NECBL products to make their first Major League appearance this spring.
This marks the eighth consecutive Major League Baseball season where at least six NECBL alumni debuted, further validating the high quality of students who come through the League.
Barnes played for the 2006 Holyoke Giants, posting a 1.61 ERA. He struck out 35 in 28 innings of work, while holding hitters to a .133 average against. A Springfield, MA native, Barnes attended St. John's. Although also drafted out of high school, Barnes ultimately signed when the Giants' selected him in the eighth round of the 2008 Major League Draft.
The NECBL opens it's 19th season on June 7th. This summer is a terrific chance to see baseball's stars of tomorrow, like Barnes, play today.
