Indiana Blast News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN-The Indiana Blast picked up two local players in the 2002 A-league college draft that took place Wednesday afternoon. In fact, the players are so local that both used to play for head coach Jimmy McDonald.

In the first round the Blast selected Indiana University defender and captain, John Swann. Originally from Brownsburg, IN, the All-American started in 20 games for the Hoosiers in 2002, tallying three goals for a total of six points. Swann was also named to the All-Great Lakes Region First Team, the All-Big Ten First Team, and led Indiana to eight shutouts on the year.

The Blast chose Ben Higginbotham in the second round, a defender from IUPUI. Originally from Center Grove, IN, Higginbotham started 17 games for the Jaguars in 2002. He led the team with 20 points on nine goals and two assists. Higginbotham finished his college career ranked sixth in career goals (20) and points (20).

Both Swann and Higginbotham used to play for Jimmy McDonald during their youth soccer days. Swann played at Inferno under McDonald from '89-'93. Higginbotham played for the Center Grove soccer club where McDonald is the director of coaching.

"We're pleased that we got the players that we targeted this year in the draft," said head coach Jimmy McDonald. "We're hoping they can contribute to make this a stronger team."
